International advocacy

he Polish presidency of the EU Council (January-June 2025) has made the fight against climate disinformation a political priority. This decision follows the publication of a national report highlighting Russian interference in the dissemination of false climate information and the insufficient measures taken by the state to counter this threat.

The Brazilian government, UNESCO, and the UN announced at the G20 in November 2024 the launch of a Global Initiative for Climate Change Information Integrity. This initiative involves the creation of a global fund that will finance research on climate disinformation, as well as initiatives aimed at promoting the integrity of information, relying on journalists as key actors in producing reliable and accurate information.

In May 2024, the UN Joint Declaration on the Climate Crisis and Freedom of Expression emphasized the critical role of environmental journalism and adequate media coverage in ensuring the dissemination of high-quality, evidence-based information on climate change.

The new European Commissioner for Climate, Wopke Hoekstra, has been officially tasked with fighting climate disinformation.

Joining forces

For the past year, we have been part of Climate Action Against Disinformation. This is a global coalition of over 50 leading organizations committed to the fight for climate action and against disinformation. It demands robust, coordinated, and proactive strategies to address the scale of the threat posed by climate misinformation and disinformation.

Raise the alarm

In December 2024, we published our first international report. This report is a call to action, born from the realization that we are at a historic turning point for the media and democracy.

For years, Europe has observed the United States, a true dystopian laboratory of disinformation, while a wave of anti-scientific rhetoric grew in strength. Today, after two years of in-depth monitoring of the media coverage of ecological issues in France, we reveal a troubling finding: we are being overwhelmed. Anti-science narratives, once considered a declining anomaly, have now firmly rooted themselves in French media, from print to television and radio.

Leverage climate diplomacy

Integrity in environmental information is one of the key priorities of COP30. Our goal is twofold:

  1. Acknowledge the threat of climate disinformation in the political declaration.
  2. Identify the strongest safeguard: independent, robust, and trustworthy media producing high-quality environmental information.
